Urban planning for growth and jobs in Pakistan

Urban planning for growth and jobs in Pakistan

FCG is commencing work with three cities in Pakistan to plan for city development and prepare infrastructure improvements that will spur the economic development and create jobs.

The cities of Peshawar, Mardan and Abbottabad are located in the Northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan, at the apex of Pakistan’s North-South economic corridor that links the port of Karachi and Pakistan’s economy to Afghanistan and beyond to Central Asia and China. The cities have been growing rapidly, partly due to refugees from Afghanistan and displacements caused by floods and conflicts. Much of the population growth has been unplanned, with the housing, roads, urban regeneration, water, waste management and sewage treatment lagging seriously behind.

With support from FCG’s experts, the cities will prioritise the key investments that will enhance inclusiveness, resilience and competitiveness of the cities and allow them to take advantage of their strengths in trade, agro-business, education, tourism and other growth sectors. FCG will prepare the prefeasibility studies for the selected investments, including conceptual engineering designs, cost estimates, environmental and social assessments and institutional and financial arrangements.

The project is being supported by the Cities Development Initiative for Asia (CDIA) and the Asian Development Bank (ADB). FCG’s work on the project is being led by Finnish Consulting Group Asia - FCG’s new Singapore-based hub for consultancy services in the rapidly growing Asian market.
