South Africa launched 10 urban renewal projects (URP) in South Africa in 2002 with a specific purpose to fast track development of urban areas in underdeveloped part of ed municipalities, primarily in Township areas. Earmarked funds were put into the projects so that lack of financial resources would not be the stumbling block for development. Each URP was developed to address specific problems and challenges. The Galeshewe Urban Renewal Project (GURP) of SPM focused on the previous Galeshewe township. The Sida funds complemented national funds in the form of providing expert support.
