Capacity Building on Pedagogically Mainstreaming Crosscutting Issues

The programme is designed to build the institutional capacity required for the development of a robust and self-sustaining land administration sector in Ethiopia. The objective of the project is to support the development of an institute for higher education in land administration to being an institute of excellence. The major components include a 4-year Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) education programme in Land Administration; capacity building of the lecturers at the institute; distance education and evening programme for upgrading of current practitioners to B.Sc. level, upgrading of academic staff from B.Sc. to M.Sc. and from M.Sc. to PhD level; infrastructure development including the construction of a new campus; support to administration; popularisation and networking on national and international levels; curricula development; quality control of teaching & teaching material; and support to the establishment of a Research & Publication Unit.

The Institute of Land Administration Bahir Dar University in Ethiopia organised a two weeks’ training workshop for the academic staff of the Institute. The training focused on the mainstreaming of the cross-cutting issues of gender, HIV/AIDS and Environment in the University’s teaching and learning processes.

The overall goal of the training was to strengthen the capacity of University staff in mainstreaming cross-cutting issues into curricula and teaching materials.

The training aimed at addressing three specific objectives namely:

1. to enable programme ILA academic staff to develop a harmonized conceptualization of the three cross-cutting issues of gender, HIV/AIDS and Environment;
2. to engage ILA staff in a process that will help them develop the necessary skills to mainstream the three cross-cutting issues in their teaching and learning strategies and processes
3. to engage the participants in practical situations that will help them acquire the necessary hands on experience in developing learning and teaching materials taking into consideration the three cross cutting issues;
