Nauru is vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and climate variability which are likely to continue to compromise Nauru's efforts towards sustainable development. Starting in 2010, the Nauru government developed the Republic of Nauru Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction Framework (RONAdapt) to set out an overall framework for managing these risks to sustainable development.

RONAdapt provides an overarching framework for identifying issues and priority actions relating to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. Additionally this framework provided a list of actions in the following sectors, requiring commitments and coordinated joint efforts from the Government of Nauru, development partners, private sector, civil society organizations, and the people of Nauru. RONAdapt provided framework for identifying issues and priority actions relating to climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction. Additionally this framework provided a list of actions in the following sectors, requiring commitments and coordinated joint efforts from the Government of Nauru, development partners, private sector, civil society organizations, and the people of Nauru:

  • Water Resources (to enhance Nauru’s water security)
  • Health (to protect human health from climate and disaster risks)
  • Agriculture (to produce drought-tolerant crops and fruit trees)
  • Fisheries and Marine Resources (to strengthen community-based ecosystem approaches to coastal fisheries management)
  • Coastal Zones (to develop an Integrated Coastal Zone Management and Coastal Protection Plan)
  • Disaster Risk Management (to strengthen preparedness, response and early recovery systems)

FCG New Zealand's role in this development was to finalise RONAdapt in consultation with the relevant government departments. This included the costing of priority actions and preparation of a monitoring and evaluation framework for RONAdapt.
