The Emerging Markets Group (lead) and SIPU International Consortium was awarded the project Fostering Interventions for Rapid Market Advancement (FIRMA). The general objective of the project was to help put Bosnia and Herzegovina (BIH) on the road to EU accession by fostering a rapid market advancement of Bosnian Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and a strong institutional framework to support them – e.g. industry associations, business development service providers, regional development agencies (RDAs) etc. FIRMA worked with the three sectors of Wood, Tourism and Light Manufacturing and aimed not only in substantial increases in sales, employment, and investment but also that the three sectors would demonstrate the capacity to cope with the competitive pressures and market forces within the European Union (EU) by the time FIRMA ends.

SIPU International was responsible for leading the work in three areas:

  1. Support to the sector of Light Manufacturing (one of the three sectors supported by the project);
  2. Gender and social inclusion, as a cross-cutting issue; and
  3. EU alignment, as a cross-cutting issue.
