In-depth Assessment and Review of PREMI, the IUCN Poverty Reduction and Environmental Management Initiative for West Africa
The initial assignment, consisted of an in-depth assessment of PREMI, the IUCN Poverty Reduction and Environmental Management Initiative for West Africa 2009-2011. The initiative receives Sida support and consists of various projects grouped under three themes. These projects are complemented by supporting activities, mainly in capacity building and advocacy:
Theme 1: Ecological Restoration, Forestry, and the Poor
• Forest-water Restoration in the Volta Basin (Burkina Faso and Ghana)
• Forest-water Restoration in Fouta Djallon (Guinea)
• Payment for Environmental Services from the Fouta Djallon (Guinea, Senegal, Gambia, Mali)
• Regional Forest Forum (West Africa)
Theme 2: Dams and Development
• Volta River Governance (Burkina Faso, Ghana)
• Public Participation in Decisions regarding the Senegal River (Guinea-Conakry, Mali, Senegal)
• Reoperation of the Tiga and Challawa Dams (Nigeria, Chad)
• Regional Dialogue on Dams (West Africa)
Theme 3: Capacity Building for Environmental Management
• Integration of Climate Change Adaptation into Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers (Mali, Senegal, Guinea-Conakry, Burkina Faso)
• Demonstrating Value of Natural Wetlands (Guinea-Bissau. Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso)
• Environmental Capacity Building in Institutions (Burkina Faso, Mali, Ghana, Guinea)
• Network Development (West Africa)
• Development of a Strategy for Environmental Restoration Benefiting the Poor (West Africa)
• Advocacy, Knowledge Management, Advice (West Africa)
This assignment was followed up by a desk study of detailed proposals for projects within PREMI.. The initiative consists of eight projects and was grouped under three themes:
