The Government of Sweden has made Gender Equality as one of three thematic priorities during the coming years and identified women’s political participation, women’s economic empowerment, gender based violence (GBV) and sexual and reproductive health and rights as key aspects to focus on.

Sida commissioned an “Action Plan for Sida’s Work Against Gender Based Violence 2008-2010” and submitted the action plan to the Government in September 2007. The overall objective of the Action Plan was to contribute to a reduction of GBV and to promote the rights and the economic and political empowerment of those subject to GBV – mainly women and girls – in Sida’s partner countries and in humanitarian assistance. The intermediary objectives were to increase and to improve (i) the preventive measure, (ii) the legal measures and (iii) the services and care for victims/survivors of GBV in the partner countries.
