Sri Lanka Dairy Sector Strategy and Action Plan
Sri Lanka faced a growing shortfall of locally produced milk. Consumer demand for milk grown at approximately 5% per annum over the last 20 years. But domestic production of milk increased only by 1% per annum in the same time frame. At this time, Sri Lanka produced an estimated 15% of its milk requirements with the remainder being imported mostly in powder form.
To face this problem, the goal of this project was to develop a planned approach to the dairy sector development in Sri Lanka where the plan outlines how to achieve the goals of government and sector policy in a cost-effective manner. The resultant Dairy Sector Strategic Plan will provide guidance for the implementation of the sector policy and will be supported with discrete time-bound and sequenced programs that collectively aim to maximise the value of the sector to Sri Lanka – its people and its economy.
