Environment

A sustainable future requires deliberate action: only by understanding our valuable environment and the environmental impacts of different alternatives can we make wise, responsible decisions.

We help align your operations with the environment, sustainably

A solid understanding of the environment is the basis for good planning. The solutions we implement must always be fitted to their surroundings – whether in natural or industrial settings. Decision-making needs information on lifecycle environmental impacts as well as the investment and operating costs of different options. Environmental consulting helps identify impacts and enables organisations and communities to make decisions that stand the test of time.

Our aim is to create integrated solutions in which human activity and the environment can coexist sustainably.

We are one of Finland’s leading environmental consultancies. Our diverse expertise enables comprehensive impact assessments that support planning. We design solutions that are environmentally sustainable, acceptable to the community and cost-effective for each need. We solve environmental questions related to waste management and provide comprehensive environmental expertise to operators in the mining sector.

Services
Ecology and bird surveys

Impacts on habitats and species are now under closer scrutiny than ever. FCG’s ecological and bird surveys support our clients’ projects and act as an active planning tool. Well-targeted and well-timed surveys play a key role in assessing whether a project can proceed.

Our services cover inventories of sites of high natural value, targeted vegetation surveys, a full range of ornithological (bird) surveys, and surveys for species listed in the Habitats Directive. We also carry out Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) procedures and Appropriate Assessment under the Habitats Directive. With long experience, we provide not just baseline descriptions but practical recommendations and solutions you can use.

Contaminated land, groundwater and sediments

Remediating contaminated land is an essential part of property development and land-use planning. FCG helps you investigate sites comprehensively and design remediation measures that are correctly scoped. Adequate contamination investigations and robust risk assessment form the basis for sustainable solutions.

Our services span the whole project lifecycle – from contamination investigations to remediation design and site supervision. Using innovative in situ remediation methods alongside traditional excavation and disposal reduces earthworks and is cost-effective. More than twenty years of experience and strong local knowledge enable the best outcomes even in demanding urban settings.

Occupational safety

FCG’s occupational safety services include a safety coordinator for multidisciplinary building-construction and infrastructure projects. The safety coordinator is involved from the design state onwards to ensure safety is considered in everything that follows.

Services include project safety risk assessments, drafting safety rules and procedures, occupational exposure monitoring, and emergency plans. Extensive project experience combined with strong subject-matter expertise makes us a reliable partner in a regulatory environment for occupational safety that is constantly evolving.

Waste management and circular economy

Legislation is increasingly steering waste management towards a circular economy. FCG has more than 50 years’ experience – from strategic planning of waste-management systems to detailed design of treatment facilities. Modern waste management minimises environmental harm and keeps materials circulating.

Our services cover waste-management strategies, treatment and transport studies, and facility design and permitting. Circular-economy services include strategic consultancy, roadmaps and services related to materials recycling. For every situation, we seek sustainably designed solutions where materials recycling and reuse are central.

Noise and air quality management

FCG is an experienced partner for noise and air quality management. Our comprehensive service range enables impacts to be addressed already at the zoning stage, with planning and emissions specialists working under one roof.

Services include environmental noise measurements, noise assessments and noise-mitigation plans, as well as air quality assessments. Noise is considered as early as possible – and appropriate land-use planning is an effective way to prevent problems. For air quality, we provide reliable monitoring and modelling to identify impacts.

Climate and sustainability

FCG provides expert support on the path towards lower-carbon and climate-resilient solutions. We help municipalities and municipal companies identify the climate impacts of their activities and prepare practical plans to achieve climate targets.

Carbon-footprinting services extend from calculation through to action plans, using up-to-date methods. In sustainability work, we help identify the most material sustainability impacts and plan measures towards more responsible daily operations. Our client-specific, tailored solutions support targets and improve competitiveness.

Groundwater and surface-water assessments

Clean groundwater is a rare natural resource – using it sustainably secures Finland’s water supply far into the future. FCG is one of Finland’s best-known consultancies in groundwater and surface-water assessments, and our services are based on deep expertise.

Our services cover groundwater and surface-water investigations, monitoring plans and risk-based groundwater protection plans. We help clients assess water-related risks and carry out water-supply investigations, as well as design remediation for contaminated groundwater. Restoration of water bodies is a special area of expertise – from river and stream restoration and fish passes to lake dredging and aeration to improve recreational use.

Case studies

FCG involved in designing Finland’s national hydrogen network

FCG Rakennettu Ympäristö Oy has been selected by Gasgrid Finland to deliver Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the Western Finland section of the future hydrogen transmission network. The Tornio–Porvoo corridor is divided into five assessment areas, and FCG is responsible for the EIA procedure in the western areas. The project advances the green transition and strengthens Finland’s energy self-sufficiency.

In the EIA, FCG identifies ecological values along the route, assesses environmental impacts, and gathers feedback from stakeholders with the aim of minimising impacts on the environment, people and landscape. FCG is actively engaging stakeholders by organising public events across Western Finland during the autumn and winter. EIA work has begun simultaneously in all five areas. Final routing decisions will be based on the EIA results, stakeholder dialogue and technical design.

“We want to ensure that everyone, from landowners to municipalities and local residents, is heard in this process.” – Essi Kuisma, Project Manager, FCG
