Wind power

Clean energy from wind

A leading Finnish wind power partner

FCG is one of Finland’s leading wind power consultancies. Our core expertise spans project development and construction-phase consultancy as well as engineering design for both onshore and offshore wind. We design sustainable wind projects, managing risks, costs and quality to meet each client’s needs.

Building wind power is a multi-stage process that demands careful planning and execution. We are a dependable partner for the whole project lifecycle – from engineering and permitting to environmental assessments and site supervision.

Let our experience drive your wind project success

We have prepared wind power master plans and Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) for dozens of projects. Our construction management consultants and site supervisors have worked on projects with an aggregate nameplate capacity exceeding 2 GW.

We have also helped design a hybrid wind–solar energy park and understand the opportunities that co-located energy storage and hybrid generation bring to future power systems. With us as your partner, your wind power project is in good hands.

Services
Project development

A successful wind project rests on careful, multidisciplinary preparation. FCG’s specialists make sure the project starts on the right track, taking technical, economic and environmental aspects into account. The development phase is the best opportunity to achieve cost savings and ensure safety.

Our services cover all regulatory requirements: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) procedures, zoning and land-use planning, due diligence reviews and legal support. Technical design includes layout design, infrastructure design and preliminary grid design. Investing in project development pays back throughout the project lifecycle.

Project design

FCG’s experienced specialists bring broad expertise to ensure safe and profitable construction. Our design services cover procurement consultancy, feasibility assessments, and both technical and electrical engineering from geotechnical investigations through to substation design.

High-quality design lays the foundation for project success and maximises the benefits of the investment. FCG helps you avoid design pitfalls and find the best solutions for each situation.

Construction phase

FCG provides experienced specialist support for the construction phase of a wind project. High-quality design, together with capable project management and site supervision, reduces risks and improves construction safety.

Our experts combine strong technical competence with extensive partner networks and, when needed, the courage to pursue demanding solutions. FCG seeks the best technical and commercial conditions for project success and ensures the outcome meets the client’s quality requirements.

Operations phase

The goal in operating a completed wind farm is the longest possible safe service life. FCG enables the full productivity of your investment by supporting turbine operations and maintenance. Regular servicing and inspections extend the turbine’s life and efficiency.

Operations-phase services include maintenance, asset management, inspections, and nature and environmental monitoring. Continuous condition monitoring extends the lifecycle of key assets and minimises costly downtime.

Decommissioning or repowering

Wind farms eventually reach the end of their technical life, when decommissioning or repowering becomes relevant. FCG’s specialists help evaluate and implement the alternatives by examining the turbine’s technical condition and planning a sensible approach.

When a wind turbine’s service life (25–30 years) ends, the site can still be used for energy production. Because the location has been proven and the infrastructure invested in, it is often profitable to build a new wind farm with modern equipment, making use of the existing grid where possible.

Case studies

VSB and FCG in co-operation: Karahka wind farm

FCG acted as VSB’s planning, EIA and engineering consultant for the Karahka wind farm, which entered commercial operation in December 2024. The project lasted eight years from planning to commissioning. The 25-turbine wind farm, with a total capacity of 147.5 MW, generates electricity equivalent to the annual consumption of about 135,000 households.

We led the multi-year Environmental Impact Assessment and planning in 2019–2021. Extensive studies covered natural and cultural values, from birds and fauna to vegetation, groundwater areas and the presence of protected species. We assessed impacts on settlement, landscape and land use, and examined noise and shadow-flicker effects. Karahka was among the first processes in Finland carried out under the combined procedure, which called for particular rigour and creativity.

As engineering consultant during construction we ensured compliance with technical requirements, adherence to schedule and budget, and we supported VSB with communications and stakeholder events. The successful partnership continues, with VSB’s next project already under way with FCG.

“Working with FCG was smooth. We are innovative, which can be demanding, but they were able to get on board with our ideas. Shared values are important to us. We are people-centred and want to look after our stakeholders. FCG supported us in this as well by taking part in communications and events.” – Katja Tuukkanen, Head of Projects, VSB

Regional Council of Päijät-Häme: Regional wind-power study

FCG prepared a comprehensive assessment for the Regional Council of Päijät-Häme on the area’s potential for low-carbon energy generation, with a focus on wind power. The study evaluated the suitability and environmental impacts of 35 areas. A steering group included representatives from FCG, the Regional Council, the Häme ELY Centre and the regional museum authority.

The work was based on technology development and on electricity-grid capacity, which is a key factor in assessing which wind areas can be realised. We excluded areas with known constraints, including nature reserves, valued landscapes, areas important for recreation, and locations affected by settlement patterns and road traffic. Environmental impacts were assessed with particular attention to visibility, noise and birds, including raptors and waterfowl in Natura areas.

The study showed substantial potential for sustainable energy generation. Total investment for the wind projects was estimated at about €3.36 billion, with property-tax revenue of up to €112 million over the wind farms’ lifecycles. The climate impact would be significant. With 280 turbines, annual emissions would fall by around one million tonnes of CO2-equivalent. The study is in line with the Government Programme, the national energy and climate strategy, and the region’s own objectives.
